About Friendlydale Comics

What is This All About?
Friendlydale is an independent comic about Latoya Robinson, a marching band freshman healing and growing from her ex-bully past as she navigates life with her first friends: a goth, a jock, a ghost, a—wait a minute. A ghost?! Oh yeah, and a hacker and a clumsy introspector, too.

Latoya’s first couple of months at Friendlydale High School have their ups and downs. While most teens worry about whether their crushes like them back, she’s terrified that her old ways will bubble their way back to the surface and prove that she really is the monster she fears she is. And CJ is tired of spending his life—or un-life—looking for his late mother’s spirit. As a ghost, he thinks giving up the search to goof around is the better way to be, but deep inside his grudge about his situation festers. Will the two along with their friends be able to help each other, or will their inner demons consume them all?

The themes center on the depths of platonic love and learning to forgive (especially yourself).

Who is Friendlydale For?
If you like A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Omia, Steven Universe by Rebecca Sugar, or Summer Wars by Mamoru Hosada, chances are you’ll be right at home reading Friendlydale. On a fun fact note, it’s for anyone who is more excited to see the supporting characters in most stories than the protagonists (I am outing myself here). I have been told in the best way possible that my characters feel like the quirky side cast members plucked from other stories.

Who is the Creator?

Illustration of Laura Edwards, author of Friendlydale

Hey! I’m Laura Edwards, designer by day, comic artist by night.

I’ve always been a storyteller at heart, even making my own comic books when I was in third grade. My mission is to create stories featuring characters and issues from rarely explored viewpoints. I believe that art plays an important role in society that serves to demystify those things that are hard to communicate in any other way, helping to solve problems that otherwise felt impossible.

When I’m not working at my day job or on Friendlydale, I love to read, write, cook, jam out to music (movie/game soundtracks, R&B or various kinds of jazz are my favorites), learn about weather and really any weird, niche topics that are hard to bring up during the natural flow of conversation, but would probably score me some good points on Jeopardy!
